The Short Answer
Not counting the truck itself, most pickup overland builds land between about $15,000 and $45,000. A bed cap and rooftop tent setup can come in under $8,000, while a full slide-in pop-up camper with lithium power, upgraded suspension, and a winch can pass $50,000. The camper is the biggest line, but tires, suspension, and power add up faster than most people expect.
The Camper
This single purchase usually decides your tier:
- Bed cap plus rooftop tent: a hard-shell rooftop tent runs from under $1,500 at the budget end to $4,000 to $6,000 for premium models, plus a cap and a rated rack.
- Wedge camper: Go Fast Campers' platform for the Ford Maverick has started around $7,700, and larger wedge models cost more.
- Hard-shell four-wall pop-up: the Tune M1L launched at an $8,999 base price, and fully optioned pop-ups commonly run $12,000 to $20,000.
- Pop-up slide-in camper: the Four Wheel Camper Fleet listed from $18,995 for 2025, and configured units with interiors often pass $30,000.
Add $500 to $1,000 for installation and mounting hardware unless you can borrow a hoist and two helpers.
Tires and Suspension
- Load range E all-terrain tires: about $1,200 to $2,000 a set
- Rear leaf pack or add-a-leaf: about $400 to $1,200
- Monotube shocks: about $600 to $1,500 a set
- Airbag leveling kit: about $300 to $600
- Alignment and headlight aim: about $150 to $250
Remember that this spending lets the truck carry its rated load comfortably. It does not raise the rating.
Electrical System
A solid weekend system costs roughly $1,500 to $3,000 in parts: a 100Ah lithium iron phosphate battery ($300 to $900 depending on brand), a DC-DC charger with solar input ($250 to $600), 100 to 300 watts of solar ($150 to $600 with mounts), plus a fuse block, main fuse, disconnect, battery monitor, and tinned copper wire ($300 to $500). Professional installation by a 12V or marine electrician adds $500 to $1,500 and is worth it if you are not confident with DC wiring.
Galley, Water, and Comfort
- 12V compressor fridge (40 to 55 quart): $500 to $1,300
- Drawer system with fridge slide: $800 to $3,000, or a few hundred dollars in plywood if you build it
- Water tank or jerry cans, pump, and faucet: $150 to $400
- Two-burner stove and propane storage: $150 to $300
- Diesel air heater: $200 to $1,200 depending on brand
- CO and propane detector, extinguisher, first aid kit: about $200
Recovery and Communication
A core recovery kit of traction boards, a 12V compressor, tire deflators, a plug kit, soft shackles, and a kinetic rope costs about $700 to $1,200. A satellite messenger runs a few hundred dollars plus a monthly plan, and a GMRS radio license costs $35 for ten years. A winch and winch-compatible bumper is the most expensive optional line, often $2,000 to $3,500 installed, and it eats 100 pounds or more of payload.
Three Realistic Budgets
- Weekend starter, $5,000 to $10,000: bed cap and rooftop tent, load-rated tires, a portable power station or small lithium battery, a fridge, and a basic recovery kit.
- Mid-range, $15,000 to $28,000: wedge or hard-shell pop-up, tires and suspension, a 100Ah lithium system with DC-DC charging and solar, drawers, water, and full recovery gear.
- Full build, $35,000 to $50,000+: slide-in pop-up camper, complete suspension, larger battery bank, diesel heater, winch, and professional installation.
Where to Save and Where Not To
Save on drawers, galley furniture, and lighting, which are easy DIY projects. Do not save on tires, battery fusing, or mounting hardware, where failures are expensive or dangerous. The cheapest upgrade of all is weight discipline: a truck that stays within its ratings needs less suspension work and wears through tires and brakes more slowly. Our payload-first build plan explains how to set that budget before you buy anything.
