Convert a Deck into a Screened Porch

Open DeckScreened Porch

Enclose an existing deck with screens, a roof, and a door to create a bug-free outdoor living space you can enjoy from spring through fall.

Cost Range

$5,000 – $18,000

Timeline

26 weeks

Materials Cost

$4,600

Permits Cost

$550

Steps

1

Assess the Deck Structure

Verify the deck can support a roof. Check posts, beams, joists, and footings. A structural engineer may be needed if the deck was not built to support a roof load plus wind and snow loads.

Estimated time: 3 days

2

Build or Extend Posts for the Roof

If existing railing posts are not tall enough, install 4x4 or 6x6 posts from the deck frame up to the planned roof height (minimum 8 feet). Bolt posts through the rim joist or beam.

Estimated time: 4 days

3

Frame and Install the Roof

Build a shed-style or gable roof frame. Install rafters, sheathing, and roofing material that matches your house. Tie into the existing house wall with proper flashing.

Estimated time: 7 days

4

Frame Screen Walls and Door

Build 2x4 frames between posts for screen sections. Leave an opening for a screen door. Use horizontal rails at 36 inches for a kickboard area below the screens.

Estimated time: 4 days

5

Install Screening and Door

Staple fiberglass or aluminum screen mesh to the frames. Cover staples with screen moulding strips for a clean look. Install a pre-hung screen door with a closer.

Estimated time: 3 days

6

Add Ceiling Fan, Lighting, and Trim

Install an outdoor-rated ceiling fan and light fixtures. Add trim around screen frames, paint or stain all framing to match the house, and add any furniture or decor.

Estimated time: 3 days
