In-Ground Swimming Pool → Garden or Pond
Repurpose an unused in-ground swimming pool into a sunken garden, raised garden bed system, or natural koi pond instead of paying for expensive pool removal.
Cost Range
$5,000 – $25,000
Timeline
2–8 weeks
Materials Cost
$5,100
Permits Cost
$500
Pump out all water and scrub the surfaces. Check local regulations — some areas require permits to drain pool water. Never drain directly into storm drains.
Estimated time: 2 days
Drill or jackhammer several 2-inch holes through the pool floor to allow water drainage into the soil below. Without drainage, the pool will collect rainwater and become a swamp.
Estimated time: 2 days
Fill the deep end 50-75% with clean rubble, broken concrete, or gravel. This reduces the amount of topsoil needed and creates a drainage layer. Do NOT use organic fill that will decompose and settle.
Estimated time: 5 days
Layer landscape fabric over the rubble to prevent soil from washing into the drainage layer. Fill the remaining depth with quality topsoil mixed with compost.
Estimated time: 4 days
Build raised bed frames from cedar or galvanized steel on top of the fill. Design pathways, a small patio area, or a tiered garden taking advantage of the shallow and deep end levels.
Estimated time: 5 days
Install drip irrigation connected to a timer. Plant vegetables, herbs, flowers, or ornamentals. The sunken design provides natural wind protection and heat retention for extended growing seasons.
Estimated time: 3 days
