Convert a Van into a Camper

Cargo VanCamper Van

Build out a cargo van (Sprinter, Transit, or ProMaster) into a fully equipped camper van with a bed, kitchen, electrical system, and storage for weekend adventures or full-time van life.

Cost Range

$8,000 – $30,000

Timeline

416 weeks

Materials Cost

$4,500

Permits Cost

$250

Steps

1

Choose and Prep the Van

Select a high-roof cargo van with low mileage. Clean the interior, remove any cargo shelving, treat rust spots, and plan your layout on paper before cutting anything.

Estimated time: 5 days

2

Insulate and Sound-Deaden

Apply sound-deadening material to the metal walls and floor. Install Thinsulate or rigid foam insulation on walls, ceiling, and floor. This is critical for comfort.

Estimated time: 5 days

3

Electrical System

Install a secondary battery (lithium recommended), solar panels on the roof, a charge controller, and an inverter. Wire for USB outlets, LED lighting, a 12V fridge, and a fan.

Estimated time: 7 days

4

Build the Bed Platform

Construct a fixed or convertible bed platform with storage underneath. A common layout is a rear bed spanning the full width with pull-out drawers below.

Estimated time: 4 days

5

Build the Kitchen Area

Install a countertop with a sink, a two-burner propane or induction cooktop, and a 12V compressor fridge. Run plumbing from a small freshwater tank through a 12V pump.

Estimated time: 6 days

6

Wall Paneling and Flooring

Install tongue-and-groove cedar or lightweight plywood paneling on walls and ceiling. Lay vinyl plank flooring for durability and easy cleaning.

Estimated time: 5 days

7

Ventilation and Finishing Touches

Install a roof-mounted MaxxAir or Fantastic Fan for ventilation. Add window covers, curtains, storage organizers, and any personal touches.

Estimated time: 4 days
