Start With the Dryer, Not the Van
The instinct is to buy a vehicle and then figure out what fits. That sequence produces the two classic failures — an underpowered electrical system and an overloaded axle — because both are consequences of equipment choices made after the vehicle was already fixed.
Work the other direction. Pick the dryer and the air conditioner first, because those two loads define the power system, and the power system defines a large share of the weight. Everything else is comparatively flexible.
Building the Electrical Load Budget
List every load with its running watts and its startup surge, then identify what genuinely runs at the same time. A realistic July afternoon has the high-velocity dryer, the air conditioning, the water heater or pump, and lighting all live simultaneously.
Two high-velocity dryers alone can draw 2,400 to 3,000 watts. A compact air conditioner adds 1,000 to 1,800 running with a much higher startup surge. A clipper vacuum, pump, and lights add a few hundred more. A working peak of 4,500 to 6,000 watts is normal, not conservative.
The vans that fail were sized against the average of that list instead of the peak. Size for the worst hour of your worst week.
Generator, Battery, or Both
A quiet inverter generator is the straightforward answer to peak load, and noise rating matters more than you expect — you are running it curbside in residential neighborhoods for hours, and a loud unit generates complaints that turn into ordinance problems.
A lithium battery bank paired with a pure sine inverter covers the quiet loads — lights, pump, fans, chargers — without running the generator between appointments. Pure sine matters here rather than being an upsell: clipper motors and modern chargers misbehave on modified sine.
Most working vans end up hybrid. Battery handles the day's baseline, and the generator starts for dryer and air conditioning cycles. A battery-only build sized for full summer duty is possible, but the weight and cost land somewhere most first vans cannot absorb.
The Water System Is Three Tanks Working as One
Fresh, hot, and gray are not three separate problems. Fresh capacity sets how many dogs you can do; gray capacity sets the same number from the other end, and whichever is smaller is your actual day.
Budget 8 to 15 gallons per dog for wash and rinse, more for large or heavily coated breeds. Six dogs is therefore 50 to 90 gallons of fresh and a nearly equal volume of gray. That is where the weight problem starts.
Pump, Filtration, and Heat
A 12V demand pump is the standard heart of the system — it runs on pressure demand rather than a switch, so the sprayer behaves like household plumbing. Size it for the flow your sprayer actually wants and plumb an accumulator if the cycling is choppy.
An in-line filtration and softening setup earns its place quickly if you fill from varied sources. Hard water leaves residue on coats, spots the tub, and shortens the life of the heater. It is a small component that quietly protects the finish quality clients are paying a premium for.
For hot water, an on-demand propane heater is the common choice because it produces heat without adding to the electrical peak you just spent effort minimizing. An electric heater is simpler to install and pushes the load right back onto the system.
Weight Is Where the Two Systems Collide
Water weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon. Forty gallons fresh plus forty gallons gray at end of day is about 660 pounds. A lithium bank and inverter add 100 to 250. A generator with fuel adds 100 to 150. The tub, table, cabinetry, and equipment add 600 to 1,000. The groomer and supplies add 250.
That is 1,700 to 2,300 pounds before anything decorative, which is why payload rating is the specification that should drive vehicle selection. Mount tanks low and between the axles, and remember the gray tank fills as the fresh tank empties, so total weight stays near maximum all day rather than dropping.
A Sane Build Order
Choose dryer and air conditioning, compute peak load, size generator and battery, compute total system weight, then select a vehicle with payload headroom above that number. Only then design the floor plan. Reversing any two of those steps is how builds end up needing rework.
