A Small Market Growing Faster Than the Industry Around It
The mobile pet grooming market was roughly $1.71 billion in 2025 and is tracking toward $1.87 billion in 2026 on its way past $3 billion in the next decade. That is a modest market in absolute terms, but the growth rate is what matters: the mobile segment is expanding 12 to 15 percent annually, several times faster than storefront grooming, and it is doing so while brick-and-mortar salons struggle with rent and staffing.
The demand driver is not complicated. Owners of anxious dogs, senior dogs, cats, and multi-pet households will pay a real premium to skip the crate-and-wait experience of a salon. A mobile appointment is one animal at a time, at the curb, with no kennel time. That is a genuinely better product, and it is priced accordingly.
Why the Van Beats the Storefront
A grooming salon carries a lease, a build-out tied to someone else's building, staff scheduling, and a service radius fixed by its address. A van carries none of that. The single biggest line in a salon P&L disappears, and the asset moves with you if a neighborhood softens.
The trade is that the van becomes every constraint at once. Floor space, water, power, climate control, and payload are all bounded by one vehicle, and a decision about any one of them constrains the rest. Groomers who come from salon work consistently underestimate how much design discipline that takes.
What a Grooming Van Actually Is
Strip the marketing away and a grooming van is four systems stacked into a cargo box: a fresh, hot, and gray water plumbing loop; an electrical system sized for a high-draw dryer; a climate and ventilation system that has to hold a safe temperature for an animal while the vehicle sits parked; and a working interior with a tub, a table, and restraint hardware.
None of that resembles a camper build, even though the two get confused constantly. A camper conversion optimizes for comfort at rest and can tolerate an underpowered system. A grooming van is a workplace containing a live animal that cannot leave, which moves ventilation and power out of the convenience column and into the life-safety column.
The Two Failures That Kill Amateur Builds
Almost every failed conversion fails in one of two identical ways.
Payload. Water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon. A 40-gallon fresh tank plus a 40-gallon gray tank at end of day is roughly 660 pounds of liquid alone, before the tub, the generator, the batteries, the equipment, and the groomer. Builders plan around floor space, discover the weight problem after the build is finished, and end up operating over the vehicle's GVWR — which voids insurance in exactly the situation where you need it.
Simultaneous load. A high-velocity dryer and the air conditioning both need to run at once on a July afternoon. A generator or inverter sized for one at a time works fine in the driveway in April and fails in the field in the middle of your busiest month. Sizing for the peak simultaneous load, not the average, is the single most consequential decision in the build.
Buy Built or Convert Yourself
Purpose-built conversions from established outfitters run roughly $25,000 to $45,000 installed on a van you supply, and complete cutaway-truck units land between $75,000 and $110,000 new. A self-converted cargo van can come in under $25,000 all-in if you already have fabrication and plumbing skills.
The honest framing is that a professional conversion is not mainly buying parts — it is buying a weight and power design that already works, plus a build an insurer and an inspector recognize. If this is your first vehicle build, that is worth real money. If you have converted a van before, the DIY path is genuinely open.
The Revenue Math
Appointments generally price between $50 and $100 depending on market, breed, and coat condition, and a realistic day is five to seven animals once drive time is accounted for. That supports roughly $75,000 to $200,000 of annual billing from one van, against operating costs that are dominated by fuel, insurance, supplies, and vehicle maintenance rather than rent.
The limiting factor is not demand — it is route density. A van that drives 25 minutes between appointments does four a day; one working a tight suburban cluster does seven. Route design is the actual business, and it is worth more attention than the build.
What to Settle Before You Buy a Van
